While knowing that development never ends the temptation to change any more things on DTTF #1 must be overcome. From here on in any more ideas are to be recorded for utilisation in DTTF #2.
At last final engine and gearbox assembly is so close and by the time you are reading this will be complete. The last thing to sort out with the fuel injection was the single throttle body manifold..
It looked easy but after some major help from Ian Baker of Performance Metalcraft, the prototype appeared. Ian made weld in injector pockets so they can be fitted in the ideal position in the manifolds.
The injectors chosen were surprisingly from the Type 3 TLE and they are equal to 410cc Jaguar V12 units and were supplied by South Yarra Auto Parts in Sydney for the best price in town.
The single throttle body was chosen for simplicity and cost and it also simplified the air ducting arrangements for the engine. There won't be any traditional tinware around this engine, instead the fan and throttle body will draw their fresh air from ducting. This saves having to make complicated tinware due to the altered position of the engine; i.e. 175mm forward from stock.
Some minor chassis alterations have been made to correct steering geometry and allow simple firewall design to seal off the cabin. Some additional support will be added for the rear wing which is the last major component still on the unfinished list.
It was comforting to see Porsche's Le Mans entry for 1996, the GT1. It seems some designs are inevitable and that old German car can keep coming back looking better than ever. The Aero look is here to stay it must work for Porsche
The rear wheels on
DTTF are now 10 ½" X 17". it's a long story so lets just say the traction is of
the utmost importance. Rubber measuring 310X625 will find its way onto the three piece
Porsche alloys. These tyres are normally used on the front of a Porsche race car so you
could imagine what the rears must have looked like.
Sparks and current will be carried by a custom wiring loom done in the original VW colour codes and plotted so that it's easily recognisable later on. With the exclusion of blinkers and interior light most of the original functions will be required, even down to a wiper and washer function and brake lights, which are mandatory. Headlights will be wired up but not connected. Spot lights will do in the event of a night race which I have done before. Blinkers may be fitted later, when window nets become compulsory.
A recent discovery after seeing the inlet manifold fabricated was extremely tight 'U' bends made from turned XXXX welded together then cut into segments. These will help make the very tight compact 3" exhaust system. A custom alloy muffler is being especially made for quietness and light weight. Performance Metalcraft is again taking care of that job too!
In the interior
white faced Porsche and VDO gauges are set to go in a very basic panel. The main
concentration is an effective and visible array of idiot lights. I decided at the last
minute to have the gauges attached to the body so a multi pin plug will detach the gauge
cluster from the chassis thus allowing removal of the body.
Speaking of which. The body styling will remain as is with the possible exception of the running boards. The temptation is too great not to have a further fiddle with them after seeing the Porsche GT1.
