Hillclimb Report.

waynes bug.jpg (17853 bytes)In keeping with tradition I have left this report to the dying moment, so I don’t have any information to work with. However I’ll give you a short run down on the rookie who is setting the 2000-3000 cc sports sedan class on fire.

Wayne Penrose is another of those helpless souls who has structured his life around Volkswagens. He is the man behind WPVW (Wayne Penrose VW http://wpvw.com.au/ (02) (4272 5644) and this month’s feature car.

Wayne’s performance in the NSW Hillclimb Championship so far this year speaks volumes about his credentials.

Round 1 Bathurst 1st place
Round 2 Tamworth 1st place new record
Round 3 Ringwood 1st place new record
Round 4 Dapto 1st place new record
Round 5 Grafton 1st place

The car also ran a 7.94 on the 1/8 mile at this year's VW Nationals drags at Oran Park .

The beetle started out as a 1962 standard and has seen the addition of Aero front and guards that have been widened another 2". This enables the fitting of the 15X9.5 front and 16X11.5 rear wheels, which easily contain the 4 wheel disc brakes.

The engine is a Type 4 2.9 litre (82X105) The big valve heads suck fuel through modified 48 IDA’s, while a 3" exhaust spits it out back.

The gearbox is a modified beetle unit with an Albins close ratio gearset, and ZF limited slip diff. All this power is still put to the ground via the trusty swing axle rear suspension with a ball joint beam up front.

Spun at close to 8000 rpm, the donk puts out around 320 hp, and in the lightweight bug, I can tell you it accelerates hard indeed.

Unfortunately Wayne won’t be running at the next Huntley Hillclimb, which just happens to be a round of the Group 7 speed series. Wayne has his sight set on being Australian champion at Bathurst over the Labor Day long weekend, and is staying focused on that. A lot of VW’s will be there however (including myself).

So set your calendar for 17th September, Huntley Hillclimb. It’s near to the old Logbridge Farm Volksday’s.

Take the second Dapto exit off the freeway (Fowlers Rd exit) and turn right. Follow to the end and turn left at the Mobil servo. 800 m up the road turn right at the takeaway shop and follow this Rd out to the foot of the mountain. Entry is free.

If you want to have a run give me a ring on 4296 8588 and I’ll tell you how to get in. Don’t leave it to the night before!!!!!!!! 1 week is best.

If you want to catch the action of the championship it is on at Goulburn the weekend prior to Huntley (I think) and of course get up to Bathurst on the long weekend. Everyone wants to be Y2K Champion.
