Ron
Croft has owned many VWs over the years from hotted up Ovals to the Riyard
Yellow Golf that he owns now. Ron and his wife Lyn recently purchased a Vento
to replace her landmark Blue Micro Bus. Ron did his apprenticeship in VW dealers
and gained much knowledge and experience over the many years he has had VWs.
After working his way up to Service Manager at a VW dealership Ron felt the
need to venture out and start his own business with fellow worker Ted Savage.
Together they started a business called C&S
Automotive located in Padstow, south west of Sydney. C&S
Automotive have been a sponsor of the VW Nationals since its inception..
Ron
rebuilt the standard 1600 cc motor using a stroker crank with standard rods and larger
pistons to get a 90.5mm stroke and 80mm bore giving a total displacement of 1820cc. The
engine has been fully balanced and features Grant rings, a Thomas billet cam, bigger
Manley stainless steel valves in the head (40.5mm intake and 34mm exhaust), twin 40mrn
Dellorto carburettors, a re-curved distributor with electronic ignition, a high volume oil
pump and a Golf GTi oil cooler. With a little colour coding and chrome plating the motor
has been turned into a multi award winning combination.
The Golf uses a five speed Scirocco gearbox with a Sachs Sports Clutch pressure plate and a Neu Speed short shifter.
Naturally the suspension received some attention, Boge turbo gas struts, KYB gas shocks on the rear and lower Neu Speed springs. Front and rear stabiliser bars have been fitted, and the brakes have been upgraded to 10.1 inch Corrado ventilated cross-drilled discs on the front and Passat rear drums. A rear stress bar has been fitted in the boot.
A Kamei body kit with flared guards, side skirts, a front spoiler has been fitted along with a bonnet scoop. This was fitted by Gary Phipps Smash Repairs who also re-sprayed the Golf in Riyard Yellow two-pack paint. Ron then fitted 15 x 6 inch Performance Star mag wheels fitted with Yokohama A008 rubber while also being colour co-ordinated to the rest of the car.
Recaro seats are fitted in the front of the car while the rear seat has been re-trimmed to match. A GTi steering wheel and VDO gauges make for a very nice interior package.
