The air cooling system on a Volkswagen needs a little understanding to ensure long life and reliability from a simple but effective design. Just as a water-cooled system needs to be watertight an air-cooled system needs to be airtight!!
The rubber around the engine compartment must be intact, with no holes or gaps in the sheet metal. These can be covered with plates and grommets.
Correct ignition timing and carburettor adjustment will head off over heating as will using correct oil for VW engines.
10w/30 SG,CD grade of oil works the best with quieter running and lower engine temperatures. the thinner oil runs around the engine quicker, picking up heat and removing it. The thinner oil is also important in the cold start warm up period when most wear occurs.
Kombis run hotter with the extra weight to push, so our extra air scoops prevent heat from radiating through the tinware into the fan. The scoops cool the whole engine up to 25 degrees c reduction has been recorded.
Quality ignition parts is one other area for attention. only the best spark plugs, distributor caps, rotors and points can be relied on for best results.
